MADARAO KOGEN
Madarao Kogen is located in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture, near the border of Niigata. The resort is known for its reliable powder snow, excellent tree runs, and varied terrain for all ability levels.
With 31 runs, 11 lifts, and around 60% of its slopes left ungroomed, Madarao is ideal for those who enjoy natural snow conditions. It was also the site of Japan’s first Freestyle Skiing Competition and offers a mix of groomed trails, wave courses, a Free Ride Park, and popular tree run areas. The relaxed atmosphere and smaller crowds mean plenty of fresh snow to enjoy throughout the day.
Madarao provides English-language ski lessons and guided backcountry tours for those wanting to explore further. The resort is well connected to nearby areas such as Nozawa Onsen and Myoko Kogen, making it a good base for visiting multiple mountains.
After skiing, visitors can unwind at the Madarao Kogen Onsen or visit the village for a range of dining options, from Japanese dishes like yakitori and gyoza to Western-style meals.
