Madarao Kogen Ski Resort, also known as Madarao Mountain Resort, is a hidden gem in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture, offering a unique skiing and snowboarding experience. Nestled on the border of Niigata Prefecture, Madarao is renowned for its deep powder snow, incredible tree runs, and a variety of terrain suitable for all skill levels. Madarao stands out with its distinctive bowl-shaped layout, featuring 31 runs, 11 lifts, and an impressive 60% of ungroomed courses, making it a paradise for powder lovers. Since it was the host of Japan’s first Freestyle Skiing Competition, Madarao offers an array of unique runs, including groomed trails, wave courses, a Free Ride Park, and the highly sought-after Tree Run courses. Madarao’s uncrowded nature, allows visitors to enjoy fresh powder with minimal competition.

In addition to great skiing and snowboarding, Madarao provides English-language ski lessons and guided backcountry tours, giving riders a chance to explore untouched terrain with local experts. The resort is also well-connected to nearby ski destinations, such as Nozawa Onsen and Myoko Kogen, making it a great base for those looking to explore multiple mountains.

After a day on the slopes, visitors can relax in the Madarao Kogen Onsen, located at the Madarao Kogen Hotel, or explore the charming village filled with restaurants and bars. Here, you can enjoy a mix of traditional Japanese dishes like Yakitori, Edamame, and Gyoza, alongside Western-inspired cuisine.
