ZAO ONSEN

Zao Onsen is one of Japan’s unique ski destinations, set in the mountains of Yamagata in the Tohoku region. Best known for its incredible snowfall and the famous Snow Monsters, where trees become coated in snow and ice to create a surreal winter landscape, Zao offers a ski experience unlike anywhere else.

The resort features a wide variety of terrain, from gentle beginner slopes to long cruising runs and more challenging areas for confident skiers and snowboarders. With consistent snow throughout the season, typically from December to March, conditions are reliable.

Off the mountain, Zao’s traditional hot spring village adds to its appeal. After a day on the slopes, relax in a natural onsen, wander the charming streets, and enjoy local Japanese cuisine in cosy restaurants and ryokan.

For those seeking fantastic snow, striking scenery and an authentic cultural experience, Zao Onsen is a standout choice.
